Mrs. Sue Griffith, 84, of Woodbury passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, after an extended illness. She was born on March 3, 1941, in Morrison, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde Gentry and Maggie Mahaffa Gentry, her husband, Dwain Griffith, brothers, Cecil Gentry and Harold Gentry, and sisters, Laura Prater and Nora Fann.
She is survived by her brothers, Billy Gentry and Boyd Gentry, and by numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
Sue was born into a large family in the rural community of Morrison. The time in which she found herself was hard on all the families in our country. World War II was about to affect everyone’s lives, and it was especially difficult for families in the rural South. Her parents were hard-working and instilled in her their work ethic. She was able to attend school and graduated from Woodbury Central High School in the class of 1959. Following high school, she was hired with the Bank of Commerce as a teller. She was well suited to the job, because of her attention to details and mathematic skills.
It wasn’t long before she caught the eye of a tall young man, Dwain. They fell in love and spent the next 58 years joined at the hip. With the exception of work, they were hardly ever seen apart. They lived in the Leoni community and found their church family with the members of the Leoni Church of Christ. Sue and Dwain were devoted to each other and to their church. Becoming life long members of the church. The Lord didn’t bless them with children of their own. That meant they took their nieces, nephews, and other children of the church and community under their wing. They loved them just like they were their own.
Sue was a patient and caring lady. She also was quick witted and loved to laugh. Her patience and attention to detail came in handy at church, work, and home. She taught Bible class for children at church. The annual VBS program at church allowed her the opportunity to touch the lives of many children. One particular VBS, she had a little boy in her class. He was quite the talker. Sue patiently taught her class while the little boy kept chattering away. She didn’t try to quiet him, she kept on teaching the lesson she had prepared. She wanted everyone to feel important and included. The next evening, the same boy was in the class again. It was time for a review of the previous night’s lesson. She asked the children if any of them could recall what the lesson was from last night. The little boy raised his hand and recounted everything she had taught them.
The well-being of others always took priority over hers. She took the verse to heart about loving your neighbor like yourself. She was also a person who was content with whatever situation she found herself in, and didn’t complain. Though she and Dwain never had the opportunity to raise children of their own they were blessed with a cat they named Thomas. He became the focus of their love and attention for as long as they were able to care for him. They built their dream home nestled in the woods and would enjoy seeing all the wildlife carrying on their lives around them.
As she and Dwain grew older their health began to fail. It came time to allow someone else to provide the care they needed. They took up residence at Woodbury Health and Rehab in the same room together. When Dwain passed away in 2020, she carried on. Knowing in her heart he would be waiting to welcome her into heaven when God called her home and they would be together again.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff of Woodbury Health and Rehab. Dr. Robinson and Sue's two nurses from Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, Sara and Grace and all the staff and nurses at Alive Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion to Sue in her time of need.
